“Now is the time for Africa to leapfrog”
28 September 2010, Dr. Edward Brown spoke about the Challenges of Transformation in Africa at a CASE Policy Research Seminar. Dr. Brown explained that now is the time for Africa to make major leaps in growth by transforming its economy. According to Dr. Brown, transformation in Africa requires structural change, mainly the strengthening of capable states, increasing productivity, diversifying production and exports, embracing technological innovation, and increasing international competitiveness.
“The knowledge is there,” Dr Brown explained, but “the devil is in the implementation,” however, this is something which can only be carried out by strengthened leadership and institutions.
As Director of Policy Advisory Service at the African Center for Economic Transition (ACET), he explained the role or his institute in promoting transformation in Africa. In order to bring the issue into a new light and to engage nations to undertake transformation more strategically, ACET has embarked on a mission to develop an Africa tailored framework for evaluating transformation.
