Addressing youth unemployment

The problem of unemployment among young people has been growing since the beginning of the crisis. Young people struggling to find work find that their lack of experience and skills puts them in a precarious position on the labor market. Furthermore, the number of youth not in employment, education or training (NEET) has been rising drastically. However, seeing as the youth unemployment among EU Member States varies significantly, a single labor market policy cannot be introduced.

The latest publication within the project “Enhancing youth opportunities in employment: determinants and policy implications” explores the problem of youth unemployment in the EU through case studies of selected countries -namely, the UK, Belgium, Spain, Poland and Ireland. The authors show the long and short-term consequences of this phenomenon for the economy and consider possible solutions for lowering the number of young people classified as NEET.
