A new study under the project "Belarus on the road to the WTO: Problems and Prospects” released
A new study, titled “WTO Accession and Economic Development: The Experiences of New Member States and the Implications for Belarus”, has been prepared under the project “Belarus on the road to the WTO: Problems and Prospects”. The report draws from the experiences of the newest members of the WTO (including China, Bulgaria, Moldova, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine) to consider plans for Belarus’ accession. The report brings attention to the economic and institutional changes that have taken place in countries recently admitted to the WTO and underlines that joining the WTO pushes countries towards reforms. This would presumably be the case in Belarus as well. A number of indicators presented in this study show the real impact of an accession to the WTO. In addition to the changes that have already taken place, the report also suggests possible further changes in the future, as well as their consequences. The last part of the report is dedicated to laying out a road map for Belarus.
This study is one of the nine activities carried out as part of this project, and is one of three studies provided related to the accession of Belarus to the WTO.
