About the seminar:
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic activity has collapsed. While the experiences of previous pandemics indicate that this was mainly a side effect of the government’s actions aimed at limiting healthcare costs, the question arises of how long low economic activity will persist. Rebuilding may take very different paths; the outcome will be particularly dependent on economic policy. This seminar will be dedicated to an analysis of the policy dimension, which boosts the chances of a V-shaped recovery – or on the contrary increases the risk that the economy will be L-shaped (or worse). We will stress fiscal and monetary policy, and the analysis will focus on Poland.
Speakers:
Andrzej Rzońca is a habilitated doctor of economic sciences and a professor at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). He is a graduate of SGH and the WEMBA program of SGH and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Rzońca has held research fellowships at the World Bank and the European Central Bank, and serves on company supervisory boards. His past positions include chair of the Association of Polish Economists, member of the Monetary Policy Council, chief economist at the Altus investment fund, vice president of the Civil Development Forum, adviser to the president of the National Bank of Poland and CASE contributor. Dr. Rzońca’s awards include the Kronenberg Foundation prize and awards from the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Fryderyk Skarbek Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty and the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Financial Sciences Committee.
Andrzej Halesiak is an economist and manager who has been engaged with the banking sector for more than a decade, working on strategic analyses. Earlier he was employed for several years by the consultancy McKinsey & Company, where he handled projects related to attracting foreign investments to CEE, the development of e-business, corporate restructurings and development strategies. Mr. Halesiak began his professional career in public administration (the Financial Policy & Analysis Department in the Finance Ministry), working on projects including preparations for negotiating Poland’s conditions of entry to the EU in the area of Economic and Monetary Union. He’s a member of the Civic Congress Program Council and the TEP, a World Bank consultant, a mentor at the Academy of Leadership for Education Leaders, columnist in the daily Parkiet and the author of a blog about economic issues (andrzejhalesiak.pl). Mr. Halesiak is the author and co-author of many reports and articles, including “What kind of financial system for Poland?”, “25+ From subcontractor to creator, or how to ensure Poland another 25 years of success”, “The Polish economy in the post-crisis world: undoubted successes, but the challenges are growing” and "Our Europe. 15 years of Poland in the European Union".
